  • OpenAI Unveils New Video Generator to Compete with TikTok and YouTube

OpenAI has stepped into the social media spotlight with Sora 2, its upgraded AI video generator app designed to compete with platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram Reels.

The app allows users to create high-definition video clips with audio directly from text prompts, and even upload short clips of themselves to be inserted into AI-generated worlds. By simply describing the style, scene, or idea they envision, creators can bring their imagination to life.

Much like TikTok or Reels, Sora 2 introduces a swipe-and-scroll vertical feed powered by algorithm-driven recommendations, ensuring users see content most relevant to them. The app also supports community features, letting users connect, watch, and comment on each other’s videos. Initially, OpenAI will roll out Sora 2 on Apple’s App Store in the U.S. and Canada through an invite-only release.

Competition is heating up in the AI video space. Google has linked its Veo 3 video generator to YouTube, while TikTok’s AI Alive and Meta’s new short-form AI video feed are already attracting users. OpenAI hopes Sora 2’s creative features and social experience will set it apart in this crowded market.

To address concerns around screen time and transparency, OpenAI announced that infinite scroll will not be available by default for users under 18. The app will also encourage adults to engage more actively if it detects prolonged passive scrolling. Additionally, all videos exported off-platform will carry AI-generated labels to ensure clarity about their origin.

Sora originally launched in December, offering AI-powered video creation from text prompts. With the new version, OpenAI is doubling down on immersive storytelling, user safety, and creative freedom.

Still, questions around copyright remain. Reports suggest that Sora may generate videos using copyrighted material unless rights holders opt out—an approach that could invite legal challenges. Experts warn that OpenAI, like other AI firms, may face lawsuits over how its tools use creative works for training and generation.

Despite the hurdles, one thing is clear: AI-driven video creation is fast becoming the next battleground in social media innovation.
